Licensing Requirements

Any individual wishing to engage in hairdressing shall obtain a license in compliance with the Alaska Administrative Code and shall meet the following qualifications:

    • Applicants must have successfully completed all courses that a school with a curriculum in hairdressing approved by the board;
    • Applicants must complete the required hours of course work in a school approved by the board;
    • Applicants may acquire a license upon completing an apprenticeship;
    • Applicant must pass a written exam and practical exam;
    • Applicant must submit application along with required fees to the Board for approval.
    Exam Requirements

    Each individual who seeks admission to an examination shall complete the following:

      • Applicants must compete 1,650 hours of course of study;
      • Applicants must complete a written and practical examination;
      • Applicants must complete examinations with a score of 75 points of more.
      Continuing Education Requirements

      There are no continuing education requirements. License renewal:

        • Licenses are issued for a two-year period;
        • However, all licenses expire August 31st of every odd-numbered year, regardless of the date of issuance, except licenses issued within 90 days of the expiration date which are issued to the next biennial expiration date.
        Apprenticeship Programs

        All persons desiring to enter a program of apprenticeship training in Tennessee shall satisfy all general student requirements that are applicable to the license. To be an apprentice the following requirements must be met:

          • The period of apprenticeship required to qualify an applicant for a license to practice hairdressing is 2,000 hours;
          • The apprenticeship must be served in a shop approved by the board;
          • The apprenticeship may not be completed in less than one year from the date of its commencement and must be completed in not more than two years from the date of its commencement.
          License Reciprocity Availability and Requirements

          Requirements for Eligibility:

            • Payment of the fees established;
            • Verification of a current license to practice barbering or hairdressing issued by another state;
            • Verification of completed training and work experience equivalent to:
              • 1,650 hours of training in a school approved by the board or another licensing jurisdiction;
              • 2,000 hours of an apprenticeship program approved by the board or by
                another licensing jurisdiction;
              • at least one year of full-time work experience as a licensed barber or hairdresser, averaging no less than 32 hours per week, and a minimum of 1,500 hours of training in an approved school or an apprenticeship program approved by the board or by another licensing jurisdiction; or
              • at least two years of full-time work experience as a licensed barber or hairdresser, averaging no less than 32 hours per week, and a minimum of 1,000 hours of training in an approved school or an apprenticeship program approved by the board or by another licensing jurisdiction; and
            • Documents verifying that a state in which the applicant was licensed as a barber or hairdresser required the applicant to pass a practical and written examination to qualify for licensure;
            • An applicant unable to satisfy the requirements of this section due to lack of equivalency may obtain the needed hours of training and experience through attendance at an approved school or participation in an apprenticeship.
            Instructors

            Any individual wishing to engage in barbering instruction shall meet the following qualifications:

              • Applicants must submit the documents and fees required;
              • Applicants must submit verification of a current license to practice as a barber, hairdresser, manicurist, or esthetician in this state;
              • Applicant must submit verification of at least;
              • (A) three years of practice as a licensed barber, hairdresser, esthetician, or manicurist in this state or another jurisdiction; or
              • (B) one year of practice as a licensed barber, hairdresser, esthetician, or manicurist in this state or another jurisdiction followed by 600 hours of student instructor training in a school approved by the board or another licensing jurisdiction;
              • Applicant must pass the written examination;
              • Applicant must pass the practical examination; a practical examination is not required for a
                manicurist.
              Barber School

              Barbers

              Licensing Requirements

              Any individual wishing to engage in barbering shall obtain a license in compliance with the Alaska Administrative Code and shall meet the following qualifications:

                • Must be a citizen of the U.S. or, if not a citizen, a person who is legally present in the U.S. with appropriate documentation from the Federal Government;
                • Applicants must have successfully completed all courses that a school with a curriculum in hairdressing approved by the board is required to teach to be licensed under AS 08.13.110 if applying for a license to practice Barbering;
                • Applicants must complete the required hours of course work in a school approved by the board or another licensing jurisdiction;
                • Applicants may acquire a license upon completing 2,000 hours as an apprentice;
                • Applicant must pass a written exam and practical exam;
                • Applicant must submit application along with required fees to the Board for approval.
                Examination Requirements

                Each individual who seeks admission to an examination shall complete the following:

                  • Applicant must complete 1,650 hours of course study;
                  • Applicants must complete a written and practical examination;
                  • Applicants must complete examinations with a score of 75 points of more.

                          Licensing Requirements

                          Any individual wishing to engage in esthetics shall obtain a license in compliance with the Alaska
                          Administrative Code and shall meet the following qualifications:

                            • An application for an esthetician license by examination must be submitted in accordance with 12 AAC 09.005;
                            • Verification of the required hours of esthetics training in an approved school or apprenticeship program;
                            • Combination of training and apprenticeship approved by the board or by another licensing jurisdiction
                            Examination Requirements

                            Each individual who seeks admission to an examination shall complete the following:

                              • Applicants must complete 350 hours of course study;
                              • Applicants must complete a written and practical examination;
                              • Applicants must complete examinations with a score of 75 points of more.
                              Continuing Education Requirements

                                  • The apprenticeship must be served in a shop approved by the board;
                                  • The apprenticeship may not be completed in less than six months from the date of its commencement and must be completed in not more than one year from the date of its commencement.
                                  License Reciprocity Availability and Requirements

                                  An applicant for an esthetician license by waiver of examination must apply on a form provided by the department. The application must include:

                                    • payment of the applicable fees established in 12 AAC 02.140;
                                    • verification of a current license to practice as an esthetician issued by another state;
                                    • verification of training equivalent to that described in 12 AAC 09.100; and
                                    • Documents verifying that a state in which the applicant was licensed as an esthetician required the applicant to pass a practical and written examination to qualify for licensure.
                                    Instructors

                                    Any individual wishing to engage in esthetics instruction shall meet the following qualifications:

                                      • Applicants must submit the documents and fees required;
                                      • Applicants must submit verification of a current license to practice as a barber, hairdresser, manicurist, or esthetician in this state;
                                      • Applicant must submit verification of at least three years of practice as a licensed barber, hairdresser, esthetician, or manicurist in this state or another jurisdiction; or
                                      • one year of practice as a licensed barber, hairdresser, esthetician, or manicurist in this state or another jurisdiction followed by 600 hours of student instructor training in a school approved by the board or another licensing jurisdiction;
                                      • Applicant must pass the written examination;
                                      • Applicant must pass the practical examination; a practical examination is not required for a manicurist.
                                      Nailtech

                                      Nail Technicians/Manicurist

                                      Licensing Requirements

                                      Any individual wishing to engage in nail technology shall obtain a license in compliance with the Alaska Administrative Code and shall meet the following qualifications:

                                        • An application for a nail technician license by examination must be submitted in accordance with 12 AAC 09.005, with verification of
                                        • the required hours of manicuring training in a school approved by the board or by another licensing jurisdiction; or
                                        • 300 hours of manicuring training in an apprenticeship program approved by the board.
                                        Examination Requirements

                                        Each individual who seeks admission to an examination shall complete the following:

                                          • Applicant must complete 250 hours of course study;
                                          • Applicants must complete a written examination;
                                          • Applicants must complete examinations with a score of 75 points of more.
                                          Continuing Education Requirements

                                            • Licenses are issued for a two-year period;

                                              • The apprenticeship must be served in a shop approved by the board;
                                              • The apprenticeship may not be completed in less than six months from the date of its commencement and must be completed in not more than one year from the date of its commencement.
                                              License Reciprocity Availability and Requirements

                                              An applicant for a nail technician license by waiver of examination must apply on a form provided by the department. The application must include:

                                                • Payment of the applicable fees established in 12 AAC 02.140;
                                                • Verification of a current license to practice as a nail technician issued by another state;
                                                • Verification of training equivalent to that described in 12 AAC 09.148, or verification of at least 300 hours of training in an apprenticeship program approved by the board; and
                                                • Documents verifying that a state in which the applicant was licensed as a nail technician required the applicant to pass a written examination to qualify for licensure.
                                                Instructors

                                                  • Applicants must submit verification of a current license to practice as a manicurist;
                                                  • Applicant must submit verification of at least three years of practice as a licensed manicurist in this state or another jurisdiction; or
                                                  • One year of practice as a licensed manicurist in this state or another jurisdiction followed by 600 hours of student instructor training in a school approved by the board or another licensing jurisdiction;
                                                  • Applicant must pass the written examination;
                                                  • Applicants must submit the documents and fees required.
                                                  Makeup Artist

                                                  Make-up Artists

                                                  Make-up artists are licensed under Esthetics.
                                                  Cosmetology Services

                                                  Licensing of Mobile Cosmetology Services

                                                  Alaska does license mobile units for barbering, hairdressing, manicuring, and esthetics. In order to
                                                  be licensed the following must be submitted to the Board:

                                                    • The physical location where the unit will be parked when not in service;
                                                    • A statement detailing the type of services to be provided;
                                                    • The name and residence of the unit’s owner;
                                                    • The documentation of health and safety code; and
                                                    • Payment of the applicable fees.
                                                    Cosmetology Programs

                                                    High School Cosmetology Programs

                                                    Alaska does have high school cosmetology programs available. Students must complete at least
                                                    1,650 course hours.
