Cosmetologists

Licensing Requirements

Any individual desiring to obtain a certificate of registration to engage in the occupation of a cosmetologist shall make application through the division director to the board and shall present proof that they have:

    • Obtained a high school diploma, a GED diploma, or a postsecondary education or college degree;
    • Applicant must be at least 17 years of age;
    • Applicant must be of good moral character;
    • Applicant must have completed a 1,500-credit hour study course with at least 9 months at a board approved school;
    • Applicant has studied the occupation of a cosmetologist and possess the requisite skill in such occupation to perform all duties properly;
    • Applicant must have passed both a written and a practical examination approved by the board.
    Exam Requirements

    An applicant for the cosmetology examination at the master cosmetology level shall receive notice of eligibility sent by the Board or the Board’s designated agent, stating the date, time and place of examination.

    The applicant taking the examination shall be required to pass the practical and written examination with a minimum score of 70% on each section. Failure to achieve a passing score requires the applicant to retake the section failed.

    Continuing Education Requirements

    The first time an individual renews their license, they are not required to meet the CE requirements. Every renewal after that, the individual must complete 5 hours of CE every 2 years in order to renew the license.

    Apprenticeship Programs

    Georgia has a cosmetology apprentice license. They must apply through the online application and in turn meet the following requirements:

      • Apprentice must train under the direct supervision of a licensed master licensee with at least 36 months’ experience;
      • Apprentice must be at least 16 years of age;
      • The apprentice will receive a certificate of registration for a period of 4 years;
      • An apprentice cosmetologist must practice for 3,000 hours and have 18 months of training
      License Reciprocity Availability and Requirements

      Any individual wishing to obtain a certificate of registration to engage in the occupation of cosmetology at the master cosmetologist level, by reciprocity from another state or country, where similar reciprocity is extended to Georgia and licensure requirements are substantially equal to those in Georgia, must obtain the following:

        • An application for a license at the appropriate level using the form furnished by the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology;
        • Copy of current license in state reciprocating from;
        • Certification of licensure from out-of-state licensing board sent directly to the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology by the out-of-state or out-of-country licensing board;
        • Verifications of good standing from each state in which applicant has been licensed sent from the out-of-state or out-of-country licensing board to the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology;
        • Proof that the applicant has met all requirements of the law, rules, and requirements of the Board as set forth in the application;
        • Pay the required fee of $50.00.
        Instructors

        Any individual desiring to teach or instruct in a school of cosmetology in the State of Georgia, is required to make application for a license using the form furnished by the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology and show by such application that the applicant has met all of the requirements of the law and rules of the board. The application must include:

          • A photo static copy of a current Georgia cosmetology license at the appropriate level;
          • Proof of one-year work experience as a licensee at the appropriate level;
          • Proof of a high school diploma or GED Certificate;
          • An official certification of required credit hours of instructor training from a Board approved school of cosmetology (obtained within four months);
          • Pay the required fee of $30.00;
          • Proof of passing a written and practical examination to become an instructor.
          Hairdresser

          Hair Stylists

          Licensing Requirements

          Any individual desiring to obtain a certification of registration to engage in the occupation of a hair designer shall make application through the division director and shall present proof that they have:

            • Obtained a high school diploma, a GED diploma, or a postsecondary education or college degree;
            • Applicant must be at least 17 years of age;
            • Applicant must be of good moral character;
            • Applicant must have completed a 1,325-credit hour study course with at least 7 months at a board approved school;
            • Applicant has studied the occupation of hair designer and possesses the requisite skill in such occupation to perform properly all the duties of the occupation;
            • Applicant has passed both a written and a practical examination approved by the board.

            An applicant for the cosmetology examination for hair designer shall receive notice of eligibility sent by the Board or the Board’s designated agent, stating the date, time and place of examination. The applicant taking the examination shall be required to pass the practical and written examination with a minimum score of 70% on each section.

              License Reciprocity Availability and Agreements

              Any individual wishing to obtain a certificate of registration to engage in the occupation of cosmetology at the hair designer level, by reciprocity from another state or country, where similar reciprocity is extended to Georgia and licensure requirements are substantially equal to those in Georgia, must obtain the following:

                • An application for a license at the appropriate level using the form furnished by the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology;
                • Copy of current license in state reciprocating from;
                • Certification of licensure from out-of-state licensing board sent directly to the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology by the out-of-state or out-of-country licensing board;
                • Verifications of good standing from each state in which applicant has been licensed sent from the out-of-state or out-of-country licensing board to the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology;

                  Licensing Requirements

                  Any person desiring to obtain a certificate of registration to engage in the occupation of a master barber shall make application through the division director to the board and shall present proof that they have:

                    • Obtained a high school diploma, a general educational development (GED) diploma, or a postsecondary education or college degree;
                    • Applicant is at least 16 years of age;
                    • Applicant is of good moral character;
                    • Applicant has completed a 1,500-credit hour study course of at least nine months at a board approved school;
                    • Applicant has studied barbering and possesses the requisite skill to perform properly these services;
                    • Applicant has passed both a written and a practical examination approved by the board.
                    Examination Requirements

                    Applicants must take and pass both the written and practical examinations. All examinations must be registered through PSI.

                    Continuing Education Requirements

                    In order to renew a license, each licensee shall provide to the Board proof of completion a total of 5 continuing education hours in a form acceptable to the Board as follows:

                      • 3 hours of the total 5 hours must be satisfied by a course in health and safety developed or approved by the Board;
                      • 2 hours of the total 5 hours must be in a course previously registered with the Board in any of the following areas:
                        • Industry or trade show, health and safety, industry trends, computer skills, business management, the area of practice for the type of license held by the licensee.
                      Apprenticeship Programs

                      Georgia offers apprenticeship licenses for the master barber profession. Interested applicants must fill out the appropriate application and submit it along with the application fee. Master Barber apprentices must practice for a minimum of 18 months and 3000 hours. After completing training, the applicant must request a “letter of eligibility” in order to take the exam.
                      License Reciprocity Availability and Requirements

                      Any person in another state desiring to apply for a license to be a barber in the State of Georgia is required to make application using the form furnished by the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology and Barbers, to submit the required application processing fee(s), and to show by such application that applicant has met all the requirements of the law and rules of the Board. When such application for endorsement for the appropriate licensing level is properly filled out and returned to the Board, it shall be accompanied by the following:

                        • Proof applicant is at least 17 years of age;
                        • A copy of a high school diploma, GED diploma, or a postsecondary education or college degree;
                        • Be of good moral character;
                        • Verification of a license issued by another state or territory that is currently active and in good standing at the appropriate level for the type of license being applied for:
                          • If the state verification does not indicate the examination was administered in English, the Board may accept a sworn statement from the applicant that the exam was taken in English;
                          • If the verification for the license was issued by the other state or territory based on reciprocity or endorsement, applicant shall submit a verification for the state in which the original license was issued;
                          • If the applicant has been licensed in multiple states, a verification from all states the applicant has been licensed in shall be submitted and shall indicate that no boar orders or unpaid citations exist in those states.
                        Instructors

                        Any person desiring to teach or instruct in a school of barbering in the State of Georgia, is required to make application for a license using the form furnished by the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology and Barbers and show by such application that applicant has met all the requirements of the law and rules of the Board. When such application is properly filled out and returned to the Board, it shall be accompanied by the following:

                          • The required application processing fee(s) which is non-refundable;
                          • Proof of a high school diploma or GED certificate of completion from a postsecondary school;
                          • An appropriate level of Education instructor training. An official certification or transcript indicating successful completion of the required credit hours of instructor training from a Board approved school at the appropriate level;
                          • Prerequisite license plus Experience:
                            • One year licensed as a Master Barber with a license in good standing;
                            • One year of documented work experience in a Salon/Shop as a Master Barber.
                          • Proof of passing a written and practical examination in English to become an instructor.
                          Esthetician

                          Estheticians

                          Licensing Requirements

                          Any individual desiring to obtain a certificate of registration to enable him or her to engage in the occupation of an esthetician shall make application through the division director to the board and shall present proof that he or she has:

                              Applicant has obtained a high school diploma, a GED diploma, or a postsecondary education or college degree;
                            • Applicant must be at least 17 years of age;
                            • Applicant must be of good moral character;
                            • Applicant must have completed a 1,000-credit hour study course of at least 9 months at a board approved school or has served as an apprentice in a beauty shop, beauty salon, or barber shop for a period of at least 2,000 credit hours;
                            • Applicant has practiced or studied cosmetic skin care and possesses the requisite skill to perform properly these services;
                            • Applicant has passed a written and a practical examination approved by the board.
                            Examination Requirements

                            An application for the cosmetology examination as an esthetician shall notice of eligibility sent by the Board or the Board’s designated agent, stating the date, time and place of examination. The applicant taking the examination shall be required to pass the practical and written examination with a minimum score of 70% on each section. All exams shall be administered in English. No foreign language translators will be allowed or furnished

                                  Nailtech

                                  Nail Technicians/Manicurist

                                  Licensing Requirements

                                  Any individual desiring to obtain a certificate of registration to enable him or her to engage in the occupation of a nail technician shall make application through the division director to the board and shall present proof that he or she has:

                                    • Applicant has obtained a high school diploma, a general educational development (GED) diploma, or a postsecondary education or college degree;
                                    • Applicant is at least 17 years of age;
                                    • Applicant is of good moral character;
                                    • Applicant has completed a 525-credit hour study course of at least four months at a board approved school or has served as an apprentice in a beauty shop, beauty salon, or barber shop for a period of at least 1,050 credit hours;
                                    • Applicant has practiced or studied nail care and possesses the requisite skill to perform properly these services;
                                    • Applicant has passed both a written and a practical examination approved by the board.

                                      Any individual wishing to obtain a certificate of registration to engage in the occupation of cosmetology as a nail technician, by reciprocity from another state or country, where similar reciprocity is extended to Georgia and licensure requirements are substantially equal to those in Georgia, must obtain the following:

                                          Makeup Artist

                                          Make-up Artists

                                          Make-up artists have two options to licensure. An individual can either obtain a master cosmetology license or they can obtain an estheticians license.
                                          Cosmetology Services

                                          Licensing of Mobile Cosmetology Services

                                          Mobile cosmetology services are not allowed.
                                          Cosmetology Programs

                                          High School Cosmetology Programs

                                          Georgia has high school cosmetology programs through vocational schools. A student will take classes from 9th grade through 12th grade.
                                          Additional Professions Licensed

                                          Georgia does not require a license for any other beauty profession. Georgia may require certain
                                          regulations and rules for some professions.
