State Licensing Requirements in INDIANA
Cosmetologists
Any individual wishing to engage in cosmetology, shall obtain a license in compliance with the Indiana Board of Cosmetology and shall meet the following qualifications:
- Applicant shall be at least 18 years of age;
- Applicants shall have 10th grade education or equivalent;
- If the applicant has a conviction record, a copy of the conviction must be included with the application that indicates the disposition of the conviction, the type and date of the conviction, time served, and the disposition of any probation being served or successfully completed;
- Applicant must complete the required hours of education at a state licensed beauty culture school;
- Applicant shall pass a written and a practical examination;
- Applicant shall submit an application to the Board with the required documents;
- Applicant shall pay the required fees.
Each individual who seeks admission to an examination shall complete the following:
- The applicant has completed of 1,500 hours of study or equivalent number of credit hours;
- The applicant shall pass a written examination through PSI and the practical exam;
- Applicant must receive a 75% or greater on the examinations;
- Upon passing, the applicant shall pay the required fees.
There are no continuing education requirements in Indiana.
Apprenticeships are not permitted in Indiana. An Applicant’s education must be received in a Board approved school.
License Reciprocity Availability and Requirements
To obtain a license by reciprocity while holding a current valid license in another state, country, or jurisdiction, an applicant must complete the following:
- Applicant must be at least 18 years of age;
- Applicant must have completed 10th grade education or equivalent;
- Applicant must have a licensed certificate;
- If from a foreign country, applicant must include an English translation of the documents;
- Applicant must have had at least 1,500 hours of education; or
- Applicant must meet one of the following if license was obtained with less than 1,500 hours:
- Licensed for LESS THAN 20 years: 1 year of licensed experience is equal to 100 hours of education to an applicant who has completed a minimum of 1000 hours of education;
- All applications must be accompanied by the application fee;
- Applicant must have received a 70% passing on the written and practical exams;
- For Jurisdictions outside the United States only: Please submit high school diploma (or record of last year attended) and beauty culture school transcript. If the original documents are in a foreign language, a certified translation in English must accompany the original documents;
- If you have a conviction record, include a copy of the conviction record that indicates the disposition of the conviction. It should include the type and date of the conviction, time served, if applicable, and the disposition of any probation being served or successfully completed.
Any individual wishing to engage in cosmetology instruction shall obtain a license in compliance with the Indiana State Board of Cosmetology and shall meet the following qualifications:
- Applicant must be at least 18 years of age;
- Applicant must have graduated from high school education or equivalent;
- Applicant must currently hold a cosmetology license;
- Applicant must have completed 1000 hours of education at a Beauty Culture School;
- Applicant shall pass a written examination through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency;
- All applications must be accompanied by the application fee;
Hair Stylists
Barbers
Any individual wishing to engage in barbering, shall obtain a license in compliance with the Board of Cosmetology of the state of Indiana and shall meet the following qualifications:
- Applicant must be at least 18 years of age; or
- 17 years of age and a graduate of high school or equivalent;
- If the applicant has a conviction record, a copy of the conviction must be included with the application that indicates the disposition of the conviction, the type and date of the conviction, time served, and the disposition of any probation being served or successfully completed;
- Applicant must complete the required hours of education at a state licensed beauty culture school;
- Applicant shall pass a written and a practical examination;
- Applicant shall submit an application to the Board with the required documents;
- Applicant shall pay the required fees.
Each Individual who seeks admission to an examination shall complete the following:
- Applicant shall successfully complete 1,500 hours of instruction;
- Applicant shall take a written examination testing both theoretical and practical knowledge;
- Upon passing, Applicant shall pay the required fees.
There are no continuing education requirements in Indiana.
Apprenticeships are not permitted in Indiana. An Applicant’s education must be received in a Board approved school.

- Applicant must complete the required hours of education at a state licensed beauty culture school;
