Licensing Requirements

Any individual wishing to obtain a license of cosmetology in Kentucky, shall meet the following qualifications:

    • The applicant is at least 17 years of age;
    • The applicant has satisfactorily completed the 10th grade in a secondary school or its equivalent;
    • The applicant has satisfactorily completed a course of instruction in cosmetology of 1,500 hours in not less than 9 months in a school licensed by the director; or
    • The applicant has experience in the practice of cosmetology as a trainee of 2,500 hours distributed over a period of at least 18 months;
    • The applicant has passed an approved examination;
    • The applicant pays the required fees.

    Exam Requirements

    The following exam requirements for any individual wishing to obtain a license of cosmetology:

      • Applicant must complete 1,500 hours in a licensed school; or
      • Applicant must complete 2,500 hours of apprenticeship;
      • Applicant must pass the written and practical examinations;
      • Upon passing, applicant pays the required fees.

      Continuing Education Requirements

      There are no continuing education requirements. Licensees must renew their licenses annually by filing an application and paying the renewal fee.

      Apprenticeship Programs

      A cosmetology apprenticeship has a term of 2,500 hours distributed over a period of at least 18 months.

      License Reciprocity Availability and Requirements

      The director may waive the examination and grant a license to any applicant who presents proof of being licensed to practice by another state or other jurisdiction of the United States or another
      country that maintains professional standards considered by the director to be equivalent to or higher than those set forth by the state of Maine.

      Instructors

      Any individual wishing to engage in instruction shall meet one of these four following qualifications:

      Pathway 1: Student Instructor Training

        • Fee;
        • Proof that you have completed at least the 12th grade in a secondary school of learning or its equivalent; and
        • Transcript or affidavit demonstrating that you have satisfactorily completed an instructor course of study of 600 hours at a licensed school.
        Pathway 2: Practice Experience

          • Fee;
          • Proof that you have completed at least the 12th grade in a secondary school of learning or its equivalent;
          • Proof of a minimum of 1,500 hours of license practice work experience obtained during the 5 years immediately preceding the submission of application; and
          • Transcripts from a post-secondary school showing evidence of 4 credits directly related to education or teaching.
          Pathway 3: Post-Secondary Education Related to Teaching

            • Fee;
            • Proof that you have completed at least the 12th grade in a secondary school of learning or its equivalent; and
            • Transcripts from a post-secondary school showing evidence of 9 credits directly related to education or teaching.
            Pathway 4: Endorsement

              • Fee;
              • Proof that you have completed at least the 12th grade in a secondary school of learning or its equivalent; and
              • An original verification of licensure from the state licensing board or jurisdiction that you currently hold a valid Instructor license.

              Stylists are defined under cosmetology and barbering.

              Barbers

              Licensing Requirements

              Any individual wishing to engage in barbering shall meet the following qualifications:

                • The applicant is at least 17 years of age;
                • The applicant has satisfactorily completed the 10th grade in a secondary school or its equivalent;
                • The applicant has satisfactorily completed a course of instruction in barbering of 1,500 hours in not less than 9 months in a school licensed by the director; or
                • The applicant has experience in the practice of barbering as a trainee of 2,500 hours distributed over a period of at least 18 months;
                • The applicant has passed an approved examination;
                • The applicant pays the required fees.

                Required Hours

                • The applicant has satisfactorily completed a course of instruction in barbering of 1,500 hours in not less than 9 months in a school
                • licensed by the director; or

                • The applicant has experience in the practice of barberingas a trainee of 2,500 hours distributed over a period of at least 18 months;

                  • Applicant must complete 1,500 hours in a licensed school; or
                  • Applicant must complete 2,500 hours of apprenticeship;

                        Pathway 4: Endorsement

                          • An original verification of licensure from the state licensing board or jurisdiction that you currently hold a valid Instructor license.
                          Esthetician

                          Estheticians

                          Licensing Requirements

                          Any individual wishing to engage in aesthetics shall meet the following qualifications:

                            • The applicant is at least 17 years of age;
                            • The applicant has satisfactorily completed the 10th grade in a secondary school or its equivalent;
                            • The applicant has satisfactorily completed a course of instruction in aesthetics of 600 hours in not less than 3 months in a school licensed by the director; or
                            • The applicant has experience in the practice of aesthetics as a trainee of 1,000 hours distributed over a period of at least 6 months;
                            • The applicant has passed an approved examination;
                            • The applicant pays the required fees.

                            Exam Requirements

                            The following exam requirements for any individual wishing to obtain a license of esthetic:

                              • Applicant must complete 600 hours in a licensed school; or
                              • Applicant must complete 1,000 hours of apprenticeship;
                              • Applicant must pass the written and practical examinations;
                              • Upon passing, applicant pays the required fees.

                                      • An original verification of licensure from the state licensing board or jurisdiction that you currently hold a valid Instructor license.
                                      Nailtech

                                      Nail Technicians/Manicurist

                                      Licensing Requirements

                                      Any individual wishing to engage in aesthetics shall meet the following qualifications:

                                        • The applicant is at least 17 years of age;
                                        • The applicant has satisfactorily completed the 10th grade in a secondary school or its equivalent;
                                        • The applicant has satisfactorily completed a course of instruction in nail technology of 200 hours in not less than 5 weeks in a school licensed by the director; or
                                        • The applicant has experience in the practice of cosmetology as a trainee of 400 hours distributed over a period of at least 10 weeks;
                                        • The applicant has passed an approved examination;
                                        • The applicant pays the required fees.

                                        Exam Requirements

                                        The following exam requirements for any individual wishing to obtain a license in nail technology:

                                          • Applicant must complete 200 hours in a licensed school; or
                                          • Applicant must complete 400 hours of apprenticeship;
                                          • Applicant must pass the written and practical examinations;
                                          • Upon passing, applicant pays the required fees.

                                          Continuing Education Requirements

                                          Apprenticeship Programs

                                          A nail technician apprenticeship has a term of 400 hours distributed over a period of at least 10 weeks.
                                          The director may waive the examination and grant a license to any applicant who presents proof of being licensed to practice by another state or other jurisdiction of the United States or another country that maintains professional standards considered by the director to be equivalent to or higher than those set forth by the state of Maine.

                                          Instructors

                                          Any individual wishing to engage in instruction shall meet one of these four following qualifications:
