Cosmetologists

Licensing Requirements

Any individual wishing to engage in cosmetology shall obtain a license in compliance with the Nevada Administrative Code and shall meet the following qualifications:

    • Applicant shall be at least 18 years old;
    • Applicant shall be of good moral character;
    • Applicant is a citizen of the United States or is lawfully entitled to remain and work in the United States;
    • Applicant shall have successfully completed the 10th grade or its equivalent;
    • Applicant shall have completed the required hours of instruction;
    • Applicant shall pass the board required exams;
    • Applicant shall submit the application with the required documentation;
    • Applicant must pay all required fees.

    Exam Requirements

    Each individual who seeks admission to an examination shall complete the following:

      • Applicant must complete 1,600 hours of training in a school approved by the Board; or
      • Applicant must have practiced cosmetology for 4 years outside of Nevada; or
      • Applicant must be a Barber and receive 600 hours of specialized training; or
      • Applicant has at least 3,600 hours of service as an apprentice;
      • Applicant must take a written or oral exam, a practical exam, and the Nevada law exam;
      • Upon passing, Applicant must pay any required fees.

      Continuing Education Requirements

      Nevada has continuing education requirements. In order to renew a cosmetology license 4 hours of education are required. 30 hours are required for renewing a teaching license. Licenses are renewed every 2 to 4 years. Licenses expire on the licensee’s birthday. For the case of those born on February 29th, the expiration date is February 28th.

      Apprenticeship Programs

      The Board may issue a certificate of registration as an apprentice if:

        • A person is required to travel more than 60 miles to the nearest licensed school of cosmetology; and
        • If the training occurs within a licensed establishment which is located 60 miles or more from the nearest cosmetology school.
        The applicant must meet the requirements necessary for licensure and must also provide the Board:

          • A statement signed by a licensed cosmetologist who will be supervising and training the apprentice which states that the cosmetologist has been practicing for 3 or more years and is in good standing;
          • A statement signed by the owner of the licensed establishment where the applicant will be trained which states that the owner will permit the apprenticeship.
          The apprenticeship certificate is valid for 24 months and may be renewed by the Board upon good cause shown.

          License Reciprocity Availability and Requirements

          In order to be eligible for reciprocity in the State of Nevada, a license must be active and in good standing in another state. The applicant must submit an application with the requirement information to the Board. All applicants must take and pass the Nevada State Law Test.

          If licensed in one of the following states, the Applicant must contact their state board and have a license certificate sent to the Nevada Board of Cosmetology:

          Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming or other US Territory

          Instructors

          Any individual wishing to engage in cosmetology instruction shall meet the following qualifications:

            • Applicant shall be licensed as a cosmetologist;
            • Applicant shall have successfully completed the 12th grade or its equivalent;
            • Applicant shall have 1 year of experience as a cosmetologist or as a licensed student instructor;
            • Applicant shall have completed 1,000 hours of training as an instructor; or
            • 500 hours of training as a licensed provisional instructor in a school of cosmetology;
            • Applicant shall pass a theory examination and the Nevada State Law examination;
            • Applicant shall pay any required fees.
            Hairdresser

            Hair Stylists

                • Applicant must complete 1,200 hours of training in a school approved by the Board; or
                • Applicant must have practiced hair designing for 4 years outside of Nevada; or
                • Applicant must be a Barber; or
                • Applicant has at least 2,400 hours of service as an apprentice;
                • Applicant must take a written/oral exam, a practical exam, and the Nevada law exam;
                • Upon passing, Applicant must pay any required fees.

                      • Applicant shall have 1 year of experience as a hair designer or cosmetologist or as a licensed student instructor;
                      • Applicant shall have completed 1,000 hours of training as an instructor; or
                      • 500 hours of training as a licensed provisional instructor in a school of cosmetology;
                      • Applicant shall pass a theory examination and the Nevada State Law examination;
                      • Applicant shall pay any required fees.
                      Barber School

                      Barbers

                      Licensing Requirements

                      Any individual wishing to engage in barbering shall obtain a license in compliance with the Nevada Administrative Code and shall meet the following qualifications:

                        • Applicant shall be at least 18 years old;
                        • Applicant shall be of good moral character and temperate habits;
                        • Applicant has had a chest X-ray to indicate that they are not tuberculous and a blood test to indicate that they do not carry and communicable diseases;
                        • Applicant shall have completed the 10th grade or equivalent;
                        • Applicant shall meet the educational requirements;
                        • Applicant shall pass an examination conducted by the Board;
                        • Applicant shall submit the application with the required documentation;
                        • Applicant shall pay any required fees.

                        Exam Requirements

                        Each individual who seeks admission to an examination shall complete the following:

                          • Applicant shall have successfully completed an apprenticeship within the state; or
                          • Applicant shall have 5 years of experience within the 10 years immediately preceding the application while licensed in another state; or
                          • Applicant has completed 400 hours of specialized training at a barber school;
                          • Applicant shall be a citizen of the United States or lawfully entitled to live and work in the United States.

                          Continuing Education Requirements

                          There are no continuing education requirements. Licenses expire April 1st of every even numbered year.

                          Apprenticeship Programs

                          A person may be a barber apprentice if the Applicant is:

                            • 16 and ½ years of age or older;
                            • Of good moral character and temperate habits;
                            • Has had a chest X-ray to indicate that they are not tuberculous and a blood test to indicate that they do not carry and communicable diseases.
                            To take the examination after being an apprentice the applicant must:

                              • Have completed 1,500 hours of instruction;
                              • Have completed the 12th grade or the equivalent;
                              • Be an American citizen or be lawfully entitled to work in the United States.

                              License Reciprocity Availability and Requirements

                              There is no reciprocity for barber licenses in Nevada. However, a person will be eligible to take the state examination if they have practiced as a barber outside of Nevada for 5 years.

                              Instructors

                              Any individual wishing to engage in barbering instruction shall meet the following qualifications:

                                • Applicant has a high school diploma or its equivalent;
                                • Applicant is a licensed barber in the state;
                                • Applicant has practiced at least 5 years as a full-time licensed Barber;
                                • Applicant has successfully completed the 600 hours of instruction;
                                • Applicant has passed an instructor examination;
                                • Applicant pays all required fees.
                                Esthetician

                                Estheticians

                                Licensing Requirements

                                Any individual wishing to practice as an aesthetician in Nevada shall obtain a license in compliance with the Nevada Administrative Code and shall meet the following qualifications:

                                  • Applicant shall be at least 18 years old;
                                  • Applicant shall be of good moral character;
                                  • Applicant is a citizen of the United States or is lawfully entitled to remain and work in the United States;
                                  • Applicant shall have successfully completed the 10th grade or its equivalent;
                                  • Applicant shall have completed the required hours of instruction;
                                  • Applicant shall pass the board required exams;
                                  • Applicant shall submit the application with the required documentation;
                                  • Applicant must pay all required fees.

                                  Exam Requirements

                                  Each individual who seeks admission to an examination shall complete the following:

                                    • Applicant must complete 900 hours of training in a school approved by the Board; or
                                    • Applicant must have practiced aesthetician for 1 year outside of Nevada; or
                                    • Applicant has at least 1,800 hours of service as an apprentice;
                                    • Applicant must take a written/oral exam, a practical exam, and the Nevada law exam;
                                    • Upon passing, Applicant must pay any required fees.

                                    Continuing Education Requirements

                                          • Applicant shall be licensed as an aesthetician;
                                          • Applicant shall have successfully completed the 12th grade or its equivalent;
                                          • Applicant shall have 1 year of experience as a licensed aesthetician or as a licensed student instructor;
                                          • Applicant shall have completed 700 hours of training as an instructor; or
                                          • 500 hours of training as a licensed provisional instructor in a school of cosmetology;
                                          • Applicant shall pass a theory examination and the Nevada State Law examination;
                                          • Applicant shall pay any required fees.
                                          Nailtech

                                          Nail Technicians/Manicurist

                                            • Applicant shall pass the board required exams;

                                                    • Applicant shall have successfully completed the 12th grade or its equivalent;
                                                    • Applicant shall have 1 year of experience as a licensed nail technologist or as a licensed student instructor;
                                                    • Applicant shall have completed 500 hours of training as an instructor;
                                                    • Applicant shall pass a theory examination and the Nevada State Law examination;
                                                    • Applicant shall pay any required fees.
                                                    Makeup Artist

                                                    Make-up Artists

                                                    Licensing Requirements

                                                    Any individual wishing to be registered as a makeup artist in Nevada shall obtain a certificate in compliance with the Nevada Administrative Code and shall meet the following qualifications:

                                                      • Applicant shall be 18 years of age or older;
                                                      • Applicant shall be of good moral character;
                                                      • Applicant shall be a citizen of the United States or is lawfully entitled to remain and work in the United States;
                                                      • Applicant shall submit the application with the required documentation;
                                                      • Applicant shall have completed at least 2 years of high school or equivalent.

                                                      Examination Requirements

                                                      No examination is required for licensure.

                                                      Continuing Education Requirements

                                                      There are no continuing education requirements for makeup artists. Certificate must be renewed on or before January 1st of every year.

                                                      Apprenticeship Programs

                                                      There are no apprenticeship programs offered for makeup artists.

                                                      License Reciprocity Availability and Requirements

                                                      There is no specific focus in Makeup Artist Instruction. See above categories for instructor requirements in other fields of interest.
                                                      Cosmetology Services

                                                      Licensing of Mobile Cosmetology Services

                                                      Mobile Cosmetology Services are allowed in Nevada. Mobile Cosmetology establishments must comply with the following standards:

                                                        • Exterior advertising depicting “Licensed Cosmetological Establishment” must be on both sides of the vehicle with the unit’s establishment number;
                                                        • The floor, carpeting, walls, ceiling, furniture, equipment and all contents of the establishment must be kept clean and in good repair at all times;
                                                        • Carpeting is permitted only within the driving or cab area, if applicable, and only if approved by the appropriate city and county agencies governing fire codes;
                                                        • All storage cabinets must be secured by the use of spring struts or friction catches.
                                                        • All equipment must be securely anchored to the establishment;
                                                        • The interior of the establishment must be 7 to 8 feet wide, inclusive, have a ceiling height of at least 6 feet and be at least 24 feet long, as measured from the front interior wall to the back of the establishment;
                                                        • One 5-pound ABC fire extinguisher must be mounted in public view;
                                                        • A ramp or lift must be provided for access to the establishment if services are provided to persons with disabilities;
                                                        • • No services may be performed while the establishment is in motion;
                                                        • Sleeping provisions must not be placed or maintained in the working area of the establishment;
                                                        • Containers in the establishment must consist of galvanized stainless steel or other noncorrosive material not including glass;
                                                        • All chemicals in the establishment must be stored in secured cabinets, separate and apart from other articles or equipment in the establishment.
                                                        Cosmetology Programs

                                                        High School Cosmetology Programs

                                                        Cosmetology schools in Nevada must be postsecondary institutions. There are no specific rules governing high school cosmetology programs in Nevada. The student is required to complete the same number of hours of instruction within a Cosmetology program as any other, non-high school, student.
